Molise is a region of central Italy, the second smallest of the regions. It was formerly (until 1963) part of the region of Abruzzi e Molise (with Abruzzo) and now a separate entity. It borders Abruzzo to the north-west, Lazio to the west, Campania to the south, Puglia to the south-east and the Adriatic Sea to the north-east. The regional capital is Campobasso. The region is divided into two provinces: Campobasso and Isernia. Other important cities include: Termoli, Venafro, Larino, Bojano (the ancient capitol of Samnium).
Campobasso is the capital city of the Molise. It is located in the high basin of the Biferno river, surrounded by the Sannio and Matese mountains. Campobasso is renowned for the craftmanship of blades (including scissors and knives), historically documented since the 14th century. It also famous for the production of pears and scamorza (cheese). The main attraction of Campobasso is the Castello Monforte, the main church is the Cathedral, San Leonardo and Villa de Capoa, recently restored, is a noteworthy garden with statues and a wide variety of vegetable species, including sequoias, Norway Spruces, cypresses and Lebanon Cedars.
Isernia is a flourishing center of pasta makers, stone masons, and embroidery crafts. Situated on a rocky crest rising from 350 m to 475 m between the Carpino and the Sordo rivers, the plan of Isernia still reflects the ancient layout of the Roman town, with a central wide street, the cardo maximus, still represented by Corso Marcelli, and side streets at right angles on both sides. Isernia preserves a large number of monuments of fairly good archaeological interest: the famous Fraterna Fountain is the main symbol in this town and it was built in the 13th century.
