Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (Sicily is the largest), between Italy, Spain and Tunisia, south of Corsica. It is an Italian region with a special autonomous statute. There are few large cities in Sardinia. In the south, the capital of the island Cagliari is the only metropolitan area (including Quartu Sant'Elena and Assemini), while Sassari is the regional pole in the north. Other sub-regional cities are, Alghero, Olbia and Tempio Pausania in the north, Nuoro and Oristano in the centre and Iglesias and Carbonia in the south. Other relevant towns are Porto Torres, Ozieri, Macomer, Bosa, Lanusei, Tortolì, Sanluri and Villacidro.

The climate is mainly Mediterranean, with a warm spring and fall, hot summer, and mild winter. The most spoken languages in Sardinia are Italian and Sardinian, a Romance language of Latin origin, but with an obscure Pre-Roman element, including Phoenician, Etruscan, and Near Eastern languages. The island contains numerous extraordinary tourist areas, including the Costa Smeralda and Gennargentu. The island is particularly famous for its beaches, but is also rich in other interesting places, such as some charming sea towns and archeological ruins.

Costa Smeralda is a coastal area in northern Sardinia 55 km long and covering more than 30 km², with enchanting beaches and a system of villages built according to an extremely detailed urban plan. The area is a luxurious tourist destination, with highly affluent European and Arabian VIPs visiting from entertainment, politics and industry. The main towns and villages in the area are Arzachena, Olbia, Porto Cervo, Liscia di Vacca, Capriccioli and Romazzino.
